Barge lost by West grounded at Death Coast
In the early morning of Jan 14, 2014, the "West" finally lost
the barge "Prima" 15 miles off the Cabo Touriñán after
having encountered problems in the raging Atlantic storm the
previous afternoon.
The propeller of the tug got entangled in the towline while trying
to reattach the broken cable at 1.02 a.m.
The Rescue Coordination Center in Finisterre mobilized the
tug "Don Inda" from Cee to the drifting barge, but the CCS
in Finisterre decided first to attend the "West" with its six
crew members.
The weather conditions in the area were adverse with west winds
of force 7-8 and waves of 4-5 meters.
The "Don Inda" managed to take the tug in tow five miles
north of Cabo Vilán at 2.38 a.m. and headed for La Coruña with
an ETA of 2.30 p.m. The barge meanwhile drifted
towards Cabo Trece at the Costa da Morte. Salvors of the
Salvamente Maritimo base in Fene, la Coruña, inspected
the stranded barge short time later off Camariñas as well as a
Helimer helicopter of the base in Cee. The hull was
severely damaged on the rocks and threatened to split.
The "West" had been towing the barge from Odessa to Riga.
