Drifting vessel still caught in the storm
In the morning of Feb 6, the "Esnaad 715" was still adrift
about 36 miles from the shore. Sasemar tried to take the ship
in tow by the "SAR Gavia" but due to the severe weather
conditions the attempts were suspended after having failed
several times.
The rescue helicopter Helimer 209 was to return to the area
with a team of four technicians of the special operations
base Fene in A Coruña which would try to get onto the ship in
somewhat improved weather conditions, with winds 20-25 knots
and waves of 4-5 meters. On Feb 5, eight-meter waves and winds
of 40 knots had made the task impossible. However,
after a short break, a new storm named Qumaira was expected
to arrive on Feb 6 and intensify throughout the day.
Winds of 80 to 130 km/h were expected in the region.
Update
Drifting vessel taken in tow
The "Esnaad 715" could be taken in tow on Feb 6 at 12.20 p.m.
about 55 miles north of Cabo Ortegal after four salvors
descended from the helicopter 'Helimer 209' to 'the ship to
assist establishing a towing connection with the "SAR Gavia".
Bad weather continued to hamper salvage efforts
On Feb 4 at midnight, the "Sar Gavia" reached the area where
the "Esnaad 715" was still adrift, but due to bad weather
conditions had to retreat sheltered from the storm at the coast.
On Feb 5 morning she heading back to the position of the supplier
and arrived around noon. However, the difficult sea conditions
in the area, with southwest winds of 40 knots and waves of
eight meters high kept on hampering efforts to take the vessel
in tow.
As the ship had no crew on board, it was necessary to lower
staff which would have to be moved by a helicopter based in A
Coruña. During a reconnaissance flight with technical specialists
on board to assess the situation but weather would have to improve.
The "Esnaad 715" was not drifting towards the coast.
The five crew members of the "Esnaad 715", which was in danger
of sinking 50 miles west of La Coruña, have been rescued in
the afternoon of Feb 4, 2014, by the helicopter Pesca II
and transferred to Viveiro (Lugo).
